Six blockers, three ways of deciding when Instagram opens.
We make HabitUnlock, one of the six apps compared on this page, so read it with that in mind. Facts about the other five come from their own App Store listings and websites, checked on 23 September 2026. We did not run a hands-on test of every app for this page, and plans change, so check each listing before you subscribe.
Instagram is blocked during times you set, after a daily limit, or all the time except in access windows you schedule. Opal, Freedom and unhookd work this way.
Instagram still opens, but only after a short delay or breathing prompt that gives you a moment to decide. one sec and ScreenZen work this way; ScreenZen can also block strictly.
Instagram stays shielded until you complete an activity or use a limited emergency override. HabitUnlock works this way: you walk or do timed push-ups, or choose guided breathing when movement is not an option.
| App | Type | How Instagram opens | Free tier, per the developer |
|---|---|---|---|
| HabitUnlock | Movement-based | After a walk (steps read from Apple Health), timed push-ups or guided breathing; an earned unlock lasts 15 minutes | Block 1 app or category, up to 8 blocking schedules, no account; every Pro plan offers eligible new subscribers a 7-day free trial |
| one sec | Pause-based | After a deep-breath animation that delays the app; can send you back through the pause after a set time | One app free; more apps need one sec pro |
| Opal | Schedule-based | Outside the rules you set: schedules, time limits and open limits | Free plan with 1 rule and app blocking; Pro adds unlimited rules and Hard Mode |
| Freedom | Schedule-based | Outside a block session covering apps, websites or the whole internet | Free plan blocks apps, websites or the whole internet; Premium adds scheduled and recurring sessions, with a 7-day free trial |
| ScreenZen | Pause-based | After a wait that can grow each time you open the app; optional strict blocks by time range or number of opens | No paid plan listed; the only in-app purchases are optional tips |
| unhookd | Schedule-based | Only in scheduled Slots, or in a Peek of up to 20 minutes after you pick a reason | Up to 3 apps, 2 Slots and 5 Peeks a day |
HabitUnlock blocks the apps or categories you choose until you earn access: walk (it reads your step count from Apple Health, processed on your device), do timed push-ups, or complete a short guided breathing exercise. An earned unlock opens the app for 15 minutes. The free tier blocks 1 app or category and includes up to 8 blocking schedules and streak tracking; no account is needed and there are no ads. Pro adds unlimited blocked apps, unlimited habits and Deep Lock mode, and every Pro plan offers eligible new subscribers a 7-day free trial. iOS Settings, or deleting HabitUnlock, can still end a block.
one sec adds friction instead of a hard block: when you open a chosen app, a deep-breath animation delays it, and a re-intervention can send you back through the pause after a set time. Its App Store listing says using it with one app is free and more apps need one sec pro, and that a free Safari extension covers websites.
Opal blocks apps and websites by rules you set: schedules, daily time limits and open limits. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 1 rule and app blocking on iOS, Android and Mac, and a Pro plan with unlimited rules and Hard Mode, which Opal describes as a mode you cannot turn off.
Freedom runs block sessions for apps, websites or the whole internet, synced across phones, tablets and computers. Its pricing page lists a free plan that blocks apps, websites or the whole internet on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Chromebook; Premium adds scheduled and recurring sessions, and its App Store listing offers a 7-day free trial of Premium.
ScreenZen puts a wait before a chosen app opens, and the wait can grow each time you open it. It can interrupt scrolling after a short period, set app goals, block strictly by time range or number of opens, and lock its own settings. Its App Store listing shows no paid plan; the only in-app purchases are tips.
unhookd keeps chosen apps blocked by default, around the clock. You schedule Slots when they open (for example, weekday evenings) and can take a Peek of up to 20 minutes after picking a reason. Its FAQ says the free tier covers up to 3 apps, 2 Slots and 5 Peeks a day.
If Instagram gets in the way at predictable times, such as work hours or late at night, a schedule-based blocker matches that: Opal, Freedom or unhookd. HabitUnlock also has blocking schedules, up to 8 on the free tier.
If you open Instagram on autopilot and a moment to reconsider is enough, a pause-based app such as one sec or ScreenZen adds that moment without locking you out.
If you want to earn Instagram time with a walk, a set of push-ups or a short breathing exercise, that is the approach HabitUnlock takes. None of these apps, ours included, can guarantee you will use Instagram less.
